Simple Actions
There was one a servant in the great Temple of King Solomon.
We wasn’t a priest. He did not sing, teach or lead prayer. Every morning before
others arrived he swept the floors quietly and faithfully every morning.
Some looked past him and ignored him. They thought his work
did not matter. But one day a traveler walked in. He had been crying and his
heart was heavy. As he stepped inside he noticed how clean the Temple was and
how it had a peaceful silence. The sunlight pouring through the spotless
windows. In that stillness he felt at peace. He felt closer to his creator.
Not because of a sermon, the music, a prayer, etc. But
because of the faithful work of one man many ignored.
It seems in life (and Masonry) we run head long in to the
pursuit of titles and accolades. We want our name on the Marquis of the
theater. We want to be the “headliner”. Motley Crue in the liner notes of their
record Theater of Pain wrote “If the Crew does not roll, the Crue does not
Rock”. How true
Yes good and solid leaders are “Servant Leaders” and I am
lucky to have them in my Grand Jurisdiction. They will lead by example. They
will make sure everyone else has been taken care of before they step up. They
will go out of their way to smile, shake your hand, and call you by name when
they see you.
But in our quest for the “Holy Light of God” to rest on our
shoulders to bring us glory and praise. It first touches our heads as a simple
brother and tool of support. Which by the way and sometimes we get so caught up
in things we forget. The highest most glory filled title you will ever receive
is not at your third degree, the 32nd or 33rd of Scottish Rite Masonry, or the
extended of York Rite. The highest degree you will EVER receive is given at
your First. When you are called a Brother for the first time.
Titles and Degrees don’t really mean much to me. Just as my
secretary at my Eastern Star Chapter. When time for introductions. She has had
to call me up. It’s not about the title at all. Besides they all know me and
know what I do. Honestly, it has almost become a game. She’s a good girl and I
love her a lot.
Sure there are men in the “spotlight” you bet there are guys
in our life, and fraternity that shine. But, no one shines any brighter than
the Brother that worked the committee, cleaned, the Temple Room, made a phone
call, visited a Brother, or did the job no one else wanted to do.
Wanna know the shining light of Masonry? There you have it.
The guy or gal (for my Eastern Star Sisters) that has it in their heart and
“Rolls” so others can “Rock”.
To finish my thought. You just never know how your “small”
action will impact someone in a major way. Oh and let me correct myself. There
is no such thing as a “Small Action”.
I love you and may we govern ourselves accordingly
