What would you do with 1 Billion?
The financial reward is great, and I love the life I have, but all money makes possible is for you to stop worrying about money. Then you have freedom to live your life. – Paul Stanley
I have posted this a few time. But it looks like Powerball is up to 1 Billion as no one won it on Saturday. Let’s talk about wishes and dreams for a minute. If money was no object and you no longer had to worry about going to work or paying rent.
If you were awarded 1 Billion dollars…or even a few Million. I mean let’s not be greedy here. What would you do?
Here is my list and it has not changed much over the years. People think Im crazy and that the money would change me. But if I won I am pretty much married to this plan.
The first thing I would do is hire a financial planner and lawyer. Their jobs are to provide checks and balances on each other and protect me from me. When you are not used to having that kind of cash it would be easy to just blow it over time and be in worse shape than you are now.
Of course, these plans are all after Federal, State and local taxes have been paid. Discussions have been made of do you take the “Lump Sum” or the “Annual Payout”. Of course, the Annual Payout let them make interest on your money when you could be. But, that is for my financial planner to figure out.
Set up funds to generate interest so I would live off the interest and not touch the principle.
Since I live in a duplex I would plan with my wife and buy some land and build a modest house. We don’t need anything huge. There is just no need in it. I would fix up my current home and since we share a wall with another family, just give it to them. So, they have more room for their family to live.
Buy a couple of new cars to get around. Again, I don’t need a Lexus, etc. Just something nice that will get me from point A to B.
My symbolic Lodge (Blue Lodge) would have a trust set up (or added to the existing memorial trust fund) with a healthy amount deposited.
I would also make a donation to my Grand Lodge and Masonic Foundation to further the work they do.
I have heard that after a while money would get boring. When you have enough to do any and everything you want, I can see that.
So let’s set up scholarships and other funds to send kids to school that may not have the chance. Kids, or adults whose family works themselves silly to make ends meet and really need the help.
Then how much fun would it be to go to the local school and pay off all the school lunch bills that are behind, catching them up. Then pay them for the rest of the year.
Go to the local pharmacy and those having a hard time paying for needed medications, covering it.
Donate some to a group one of my Lodge Brothers works for Medical Missions that travel the world and provide needed surgeries to people of poverty-stricken countries for free.
The ideas are endless. What would you do with what’s left of 1 Billion after taxes?
I love you and may we govern ourselves accordingly
