Protocol?

So, the other day I went and visited a Lodge. Had a wonderful time and got more signatures on my “Traveling Bible”.

While I was there a Brother who is a member of a Masonic riding group was promoting that group hard. Now I want it made clear that I am not writing this to disrespect that Brother at all. I believe him to be a good Brother and solid Mason. He asked me a number of questions and listened intently as I answered. I was a member of his riding group at one time, and he told me he was sorry I had a bad experience. Also helped me carry my things to my car. I look forward in getting to know him better in the future and having him visit my Lodge for meetings and study clubs.

During our discussion we discussed why I would not join his group. One I was a member at one time and walked away, for reasons. But the other and maybe the most important was they do not follow MC (Motorcycle Club..Community…Culture) protocol. I was tole they are an RA (Riding Association) and protocol does not apply. Oh, my Brother it sure does. If you put a patch on your back and your leg over a bike, it applies. I told him he just has not run into the wrong person in the right place yet.

Protocol is important. It is the standard and tradition on how things run and run smoothly. With in Masonry Protocol comes from a few sources. The first being the Landmarks, Anderson's book of Constitutions, Jurisdictions By-Laws, and your Lodge Bylaws. Then there are the unwritten rules and Traditions of your Lodge that can only be learned by attending your meetings and degree work.

This takes time. Honestly it takes a fair bit of time. Part of why in the MC world there is a prospect period. BTW that period never really ends. Maybe that is why I do not think we ever really leave the North Esat Corner of the Lodge.

This is also why we need to take time to get to know the people wanting to be a member of our Lodge and be honest with what is expected. Today I was at an even at my home lodge. A guy came up and introduced himself and asked, “My Grandfather was a Mason, does that automatically make me a member?” No, it does not. But we will be happy and honored to visit with you and educate you on protocol and the process of becoming a member.

Again I am not dogging on the Brother at all. I am sure he is a very solid Mason. But, let me ask. Is your Lodge teaching you proper Masonic Protocol from our founding, governing documents, and Lodge Traditions? If not, they should be.

I love you and may we govern ourselves accordingly
