Milk with your Meat?
I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not
yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, - 1 Corinthians
3:2
What come you here to do? This is maybe one of the most important
questions in Masonry. It is followed up by three very distinct answers. Yes, I
know there are personal responses, but in our ritual, there are three. I say that because I know I’ll get a response
saying, “I joined to go do this other thing over here”. There is nothing wrong
with that “other thing” over there, and I would not discourage anyone from
doing that, in time.
But this page is very “symbolic Lodge” forward, so that is
our focus, the Blue or Symbolic Lodge.
We are always on the quest for “further light,” we want to
know more. But in our quest and thirst for more Masonic Knowledge, do we
sometimes skirt over the light we have in front of us? Did we take the time to
really focus on the lessons we were given and apply them? That is how you turn “knowledge
into Wisdom”. Knowing something does not
really mean much unless you have come to really understand it. That only
happens by letting the rubber meet the road and putting some mileage on it, and
making it your own. Then you can sail forward to the next lesson. Because, like
a beautiful building, one stone is placed on the other. If the stone below is
not firm, the building is weak and will more than likely not pass city
code. Dang code inspectors.
Let me ask another question. I know I have referenced 1
Corinthians 3:2, and I am not doing so to be insulting at all. But to cause us
to think and ask questions. First, do we really understand why we are here and
what we have come to do? Do we really take the time to look at the Light we
have been shown? Now for the third question.
We may have jumped on our ship and sailed far from the shore
of our early lessons and thoughts. Do we ever look back and revisit them? Do we
take time to re-evaluate where we have been and where we are going? If not, we
should.
Masonry is, in my opinion, a living, breathing thing. It
always has something to teach. Now, what it has to teach me may not be what it
has to teach you. That’s ok, because we end up teaching each other. But it is
important to revisit the early lessons from time to time. Why? Because you have
changed. You are not the same person you were yesterday, last week, last
year. Because of that, you have a
different perspective and will see the lesson a bit differently. Meaning you
have progressed and will gain a different insight. More light and deeper
wisdom.
Yes, as “baby masons,” we drink milk. But, as we grow,
sometimes a glass of milk is a refreshing way to “wash down” that Prime Rib.
I love you, and may we govern ourselves accordingly
