The Road


 


Last night at Lodge, I was given the opportunity within Masonry I have never really taken. Oh, sure, I have done a lot of things and enjoyed them. But this is one I have never taken the time to do. Not sure why, just haven’t.

There is a young man in our Lodge who is a Fellow Craft and just received a new mentor, me. His current mentor has some family stuff going on, so I volunteered to step up.

I know what some of you are going to say. Good Job, Worshipful, take that young pup under your wing and…

Wait a minute, hold on. Yes, that’s a part of it. I want this young Brother to be properly trained. We will go over things and discuss stuff not normally in a “bare bones” Lodge proficiency. We will even go beyond the Grand Lodge Proficiency requirements. Oh, you did not know Grand Lodge has a basic requirement for proficiency. My jurisdiction does. We will go a bit beyond that.

I stepped up for a couple of reasons. The first , as I said I want him to have a solid masonic experience. That is not just degree work. But the Masonic Experience is every single time you walk in the door of the Temple. It is every single time you pick up the phone and call a Brother. It is every single time you think about a lesson, thought, idea, or concept. And it sure as anything is when you take that idea out of the Temple and put it to use.

I am doing this for me. Yep, dog gone right I am being selfish for a bit. What we most need to learn we teach. So, I will be teaching. No, we will be teaching each other. This Brother who has had a bit of a rocky start has as much to teach me (good and bad) about Masonry and life as I do him.

So, I am stepping down a bit, setting a bit of Pride to the side. Oh, it’s there, don’t get me wrong. Putting my hand in his. Offering a bit of trust. Then walking the road with him. Sure, our journeys will be a bit different and our experiences in life will not be the same. But we will be on the same road.

We will see how it goes.

A number of the thoughts and posts I write about come from things I have seen in different groups or from conversations I have had with Brothers. This one is no different.   The other day I took part in an investigation committee for a Brother looking to join a Traditional Observance Lodge. OK, It was mine and I am very excited about the possibility of doing Masonic work with these Brothers. During our discussion it was asked in a nutshell “How did I view Masonry”. We discussed charity, philanthropy, community work, etc. This is NOT Masonry. Sure, as Masons we do work in the community. Yes, we have scholarships and do good works. In my jurisdiction we have a Masonic Foundation dedicated to these efforts. They do a wonderful job at it as well. I have also seen and met people that feel Freemasonry is a social club and treat it like the Elks, Eagles, Moose, and other such Lodges. This is The Way

      Last night at Lodge I was asked to give some Masonic Ed. Not really having much prepared I just talked off the top of my head. I asked the question “Why are we here?” It’s always fair question and should be asked ever time we enter Temple. As Masons we are and should be selfish. I know some will question that. But we are Masons to better ourselves. Or in my opinion should be. We are here to work on who we are, not who we were. The person we were yesterday is gone. Today is all that matters. Living in the moment. Tending our wick so we can be a light to ourselves. But I also said that is Masonry is left in the Temple is will burn out and die. We are the light in a darkened world. By living what we believe we can and do change the World. How that is done is up to the Mason. So go to Temple. Learn the lessons taught there, embrace them, share them. This is the way. What is in your cup?

  One day a Buddhist Monk was sitting with his students in meditation. They had been there a while. Enjoying the peacefulness of the landscape and the shade of the Cherry Trees. In time the monk opened his eyes and looked at his novice students. As they each stopped their meditation and regained focus on their teacher he asked them a question. He said “Imagine you are walking, and you have with you a cup of tea. A man bumps into you, and you spill your drink. Why did you spill it?” They looked at him puzzled. The answer was simple. They each said, “Because the man bumped us causing us to spill the tea.” The Monk looks at them and smiles. While that does appear to be the logical answer it is in fact wrong. They looked at him with puzzled faces. “But, Teacher, we had tea and the man bumped into us and it spilled.” The Monk then said…your tea spilled as it was what you were carrying in your cup.
