To many walls...not enough bridges
“Men build too many walls and not enough bridges.”
― Joseph Fort Newton
The proceedings of the Grand Lodge of Mississippi have me
thinking. Now, let me say I was not there, and was the vote regarding the
Prince Hall Grand Lodge based on a racial tone? I honestly cannot answer that.
But I know perception is reality.
I know that my understanding of Masonry has nothing to do
with a man's race, ethnic background, politics, religion, or social standing. None
of that matters, or shouldn’t.
Does racism exist? Sadly, it does. Does racism exist within
Masonry? That is an interesting
question. Within its principles? No, I will say it does not. Does it exist within
the hearts of some Masons? Sadly, it does. That is a shame.
A few years ago, a Brother from a Lodge in my jurisdiction
decided he wanted to transfer and move his membership. He went through the
process of transfer, was voted on, etc. He was a Brother, why not? It wasn’t until
after the vote to approve that we learned something. “I am coming to your Lodge
because mine is becoming a bit to “Dark”.
Excuse me? What?
A black man was elected Master of his Lodge, and he had an
issue with it, so he left and came to mine. We patted him on the back, and
after Lodge walked him to his car. “Brother, that behavior, thought, and
practice is not welcome here. Read into it as you will”. He never returned.
I will speak to my understanding of my Fraternity. When I
took my obligation, it was my understanding that I would treat all Brothers as
equals. I believe I found that within Masonry.
Now I am not telling you this story to paint Masonry in a
bad light or with a broad brush. Neither should happen at all. I am not saying
this to give my jurisdiction a “black eye”.
The most important way to resolve an issue is knowing there
is one. Again, this is not the whole of the Fraternity. But in some cases, the
errors of humanity, yes, on both sides.
I know I have made errors in my life and need correction. Maybe
we all do?
I love you and may we govern ourselves accordingly
